Documents Required for Road-Legal Number Plates

MotorbikePlates.co.uk is a DVLA-registered number plate supplier. By law, we must verify your identity and confirm that you are entitled to use the registration number before we can manufacture a road-legal number plate.

You will need to provide:

  1. Proof of your name and address
  2. Proof that you are entitled to use the registration number

1. Proof of Your Name and Address

You can provide one of the following documents to confirm your name and address:

  • Driving licence, with or without a photograph
  • Utility bill dated within the last six months
  • Council Tax bill dated within the last six months
  • Rates bill from Northern Ireland dated within the last six months
  • Bank or building society statement dated within the last six months
  • Government-issued national identity card

The following documents confirm your name only:

  • Passport
  • Bank or building society debit or credit card
  • Police warrant card
  • Armed forces identity card

If your chosen identity document only confirms your name, you may also need to provide a separate accepted document showing your current address.

2. Proof of Entitlement to the Registration

You must also provide one of the following documents to prove that you are legally entitled to display the registration number:

  • Vehicle registration certificate or logbook (V5C or V5CNI)
  • Green new keeper slip from the V5C or V5CNI
  • Certificate of entitlement (V750 or V750NI)
  • Retention document (V778)
  • Vehicle tax or SORN renewal reminder (V11 or V11NI)
  • Temporary registration certificate (V379 or V379NI)
  • Number plate authorisation certificate (V948) carrying an official DVLA stamp
  • Electronic number plate authorisation certificate (eV948 or eV948/2)
  • Letter of authorisation from a fleet operator, lease company or hire company quoting the V5C document reference number
  • PDF of the vehicle details from the View Vehicle Record service, where the fleet uses the V5C on Demand scheme
  • UK trailer registration certificate (VTRC), where applicable

Uploading Your Documents

When ordering online, please upload clear, complete and readable images of the required documents. All important details must be visible, including your name, address, registration number and document reference information where applicable.

Please make sure:

  • The entire document is visible
  • The photograph or scan is clear and in focus
  • None of the required information is covered or cropped
  • The registration entered with your order matches your entitlement document
  • Your documents are valid and have not expired

We may contact you if your documents are unclear, incomplete or do not provide the required evidence. Your road-legal plate cannot be manufactured until the necessary checks have been completed.

Why Are These Documents Required?

Registered number plate suppliers are legally required to verify the identity of the customer and their entitlement to use the registration number. These checks help prevent number plate fraud, cloning and other unlawful activity.
